The Qantas blast fence has arrived at the Woolacotts Consulting Engineers Sydney office.

The blast fence is a multi-award winning project, designed by Woolacotts engineers. Jet blasts have the power to uproot trees, shatter windows, overturn cars and trucks and injure people. The Qantas blast fence protects people and property  at the Mascot jet base during post-maintenance engine testing.

The project was featured in a year long exhibition, a collaboration between the Powerhouse Museum and the Sydney division of Engineers Australia.

Now the exhibition has come to an end, the operating scale model has arrived at the Woolacotts Sydney office.

“The Powerhouse Museum team put so much work into constructing a real working scale model of the blast fence,” said Scott Clemmett, principal engineer and aviation sector leader.

“It would have been a shame for it to end up in storage – so we decided to bring it into our offices, where our employees and clients can see it, interact with it, and enjoy it,” he added.

The project has received significant industry recognition, including silver at the Consult Australia Awards, highly commended at the Australian Steel Institute Awards and was a finalist in the Engineers Australia innovation award.
