Woolacotts Consulting Engineers is proud to support young architecture talent at this year’s Urban Islands event.
Urban Islands is an independent cross-university masters architecture studio which takes place on Cockatoo Island – a UNESCO World Heritage site and former convict penal establishment.
The program, held during July, is a series of intensive studios, workshops and seminars run by leading practitioners from around the world.
It is a unique international experience for students focusing on an extraordinary place, as an adjunct to existing architecture and design programs. It is an elective in the masters programs of Sydney University, UNSW, UTS, RMIT, Adelaide University and the University of Newcastle.
Since 2006, Urban Islands has hosted emerging architects and firms from Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, England, Germany, India, Japan, Peru, USA, Canada and Mexico.
Befitting its location on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour, the program is constructed as an immersive experience, with high expectations on both studio leaders and their students. A collaborative and productive culture is central to the program, informed by participation in an array of events including site visits, installations, presentations, lectures, symposia and the closing day installations and reviews on the island.
Together with Sydney University, Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, the Institute of Architects and Ferrocon, Woolacotts Consulting Engineers is a sponsor of the 2014 Urban Islands program. This year, Woolacotts is the materials sponsor, contributing towards the materials for the construction of the final student projects.
“We’re proud to support the next generation of architects as part of this unique event,” said Principal Engineer and Operations Director, Stephen Branch.
