North Beach pavilion reopening
26 September 2012
North Beach bathers’ pavilion in Wollongong is reopening following extensive work to the historic building and its surrounds.
Originally opened in November 1938, the heritage listed pavilion underwent a $12 million refurbishment to provide modern change areas, lifeguard facilities and a new cafe.
“This is really exciting news. We’re returning the grand dame of North Beach back to the community, and she’s looking really good following her additions and makeover,” said Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM.
Woolacotts was responsible for the design of hydraulic services for the project.
“This required a detailed understanding of heritage buildings and works that can occur within them,” said Clare Woods, Principal Engineer.
“We delivered the hydraulics for the new public amenities and cafe, including hot and cold water, gas, sewer, rainwater harvesting system, grease and sand traps,” Clare said.
The pavilion will re-open at a thirties themed event on 30 September. The event will feature a long board surfing competition and a life saving display.
