'Project Barcelona', as it is affectionately known, will set a new paradigm in multimodal learning environments.

The architectural design was part of a competition won by WMK.

With innovative indoor/outdoor learning spaces, flexible pavilion buildings, a marketplace food offering, and environmental sustainable energy production, rainwater harvesting and building elements, Project Barcelona will define the heart and spine of the school campus and lead the way in new innovative learning.

The design features an innovative roof canopy that floats over new buildings and indoor/outdoor spaces to create

flexible learning environments and interactive reception, administration and support facilities.

The modular ‘breathing’ roof structure reaches out to define the school's entry and reaches back to connect with both new and existing school buildings.

The pavilion structures accommodate flexible learning spaces, student support facilities and the welcoming reception/administration services.

Not only does the canopy roof provide architectural presence, it also provides the medium for energy production via photovoltaic cells and water collection to assist with solar hot water heating, natural convection cooling and irrigation.

Our role

Woolacotts Consulting Engineers was engaged to provide the structural and civil engineering design for this unique and innovative project.

Woolacotts designed tapered precast concrete columns, unique structural steel framing and connections to preserve the architectural design intent and a building with environmentally sustainable energy features.

The design phase is complete, and stage one (administration building) is nearing completion. Stage two of Project Barcelona is on its way.
