Located in South Nowra, 170 kilometres south of Sydney, the South Coast Correctional Centre houses up to 600 offenders, both classified and
on remand.
Opened in late 2010, the centre provides 395 maximum and medium security male
beds, 154 minimum security male beds and 62 minimum security female beds. The centre is a
working prison and offers a variety of employment and vocational training opportunities.
Following the successful delivery of Cessnock Correctional Centre, Woolacotts was awarded the South Coast Correctional Centre project.
Woolacotts delivered the structural, civil and hydraulic engineering design for the $120 million, facility for the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services.
Flanked by two major creeks, the site
presented numerous access challenges which were resolved through negotiation with the local council and RTA.
The facility was built from insulated precast panels, surrounded by dual perimeter security fences constructed from prefabricated steel. Woolacotts provided the shop drawings, which were then cast off site by prisoners in the Cessnock Correctional Centre.
The project received two awards – the Premier’s Award for community engagement (increasing Aboriginal participation in construction) and a Master Builders Awards for excellence in construction.
Other prison projects
Woolacotts has been involved in many prison projects including:
— Auckland Women's Prison
— Long Bay Correctional Centre
— Ravenhall Prison
— Silverwater Remand Centre
