In 2012, new legislation was introduced in New South Wales, requiring aged care facilities to install automatic sprinkler systems to reduce the fire risk for elderly and vulnerable residents.
The regulation began in January 2013. Commonwealth accredited aged care facilities were given 18 months to retrofit sprinklers.
Catholic Healthcare is one of the largest Catholic providers of aged, community and healthcare services. Operating in New South Wales and South East Queensland, its mission is to promote life in all its fullness, inspired by the Catholic tradition by providing aged, health and community services.
Our role
Woolacotts Consulting Engineers was engaged by Catholic Healthcare to audit its facilities and retrofit sprinkler systems across its portfolio of properties in New South Wales. Our role included:
— Auditing individual facilities for fire sprinkler system compliance
— Sprinkler system design and documention
— Developing general performance specifications for use across multiple facilities where performance based solutions were suitable
— Planning approvals
— Private certifying authority engagement
— Identifying suitable installers
Woolacotts has to date successfully audited and retrofitted 23 sites for Catholic Healthcare, adding to our extensive experience designing sprinkler and other hydraulic systems in health and aged care facilities.
