Role
Structural and civil engineer

City Quarter is a growing community located in the heart of Camperdown on the site that was formerly the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children. The site is rich in heritage and contains a number of mementos of its historical roots.

Together with the Biscuit Factory, Trio, Vie and DNA, developments have redefined the Camperdown precinct into a diverse urban hub and an inner west landmark.

Etage, within the award-winning City Quarter development is housed in an existing, refurbished hospital building.

Our role

Woolacotts was appointed as structural and civil engineers at several stages for full documentation for the 112 unit development which comprised the adapted reuse and extension of the hospital’s outpatient department.

Project challenges

Woolacotts capitalised on the hard rock foundations by adding a substation to existing Lower Ground Floor. A new complex four level structure was woven into the existing foundations and floor slabs. A mezzanine floor was added on top of existing level four slab. The seamless addition of a spiral ramp to the existing building was one of the many outcome Woolacotts cooperated with the architect to achieve.

The altered structure saved expensive and unnecessary demolition, satisfied the architect’s creation of usable space and preserved some heritage aspects of the old building.
