Role
Structural and civil engineer

City Quarter is a growing community located in the heart of Camperdown on the site that was formerly the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children. The site is rich in heritage and contains a number of mementos of its historical roots.

Developments have redefined the Camperdown precinct into a diverse urban hub and an inner west landmark.

Venables House is a 38 unit development within City Quarter.

Our role

After successfully completing previous stages development (Etage & Vie), Woolacotts was selected to provide structural engineering services for the project.

History

Venables House operated as nurses’ quarters from 1909. The original hospital buildings, including the ‘L’ shaped section of Venable House, have aesthetic significance for their architectural style and purposed built design by Kent & Budden architects in 1903.

Project challenges

It was a challenge to coordinate with the architect to fulfil his design idea of adaptive reuse/alteration and addition of the building. Woolacotts seamlessly wove the new concrete and steel structures to the existing brick and timber heritage building by exploring a variety engineering solutions.

The engineering solutions played a key role for the successful addition of concrete balcony and additional level on top of the existing building.
