Structural and civil engineer
Cessnock Correctional Centre is a minimum and maximum security prison for men located in the New South Wales Hunter region.
Woolacotts was engaged to provide civil and structural design and documentation for a high-tech 250 bed extension.
The two-year project has seen a new purpose-built maximum security centre - the first of its kind in the country - built within the existing correctional complex.
Project scope
A maximum security extension to the existing centre included a new gatehouse, reception, clinic, maximum security visitors area, industrial workshop, and exercise yards.
The built area comprises nine new major buildings, new internal roadways and a new parking area.
More than 10,000 cubic metres of concrete, enough to fill four Olympic-sized pools, was poured to expand Cessnock Correctional Centre. More than 6,000 square metres of asphalt and more than 1,500 fence panels were also used.
ESD
As part of the iterative design process environmentally sensitive design opportunities were investigated and reviewed using the Greenstar rating system. Sustainable initiatives included improved insulations, collection and re-use of rainwater, secondary treatment of stormwater prior to discharge for re-use, water efficient fittings, and reuse of landfill.
